UDM Law is committed to a diverse student body, which includes students with children. We believe that a law student and parent has a better chance of successfully completing their degree when the student and faculty are realistic and forward thinking about the challenges of pursuing an advanced degree and parenthood simultaneously.

University of Detroit Mercy Law Students with Children (“LSWC”) is a support group for law students with children, who face the unique challenge of balancing the rigors of law school with the many duties of family life. LSWC offers the chance to meet other UDM Law parents and pick up tips for surviving law school as well as welcome prospective UDM Law students to participate in our organization.

Law students who are parents or anticipate becoming parents need to work closely with their advisors and faculty in planning for a child to enter the home, arranging a timeline for meeting requirements, and considering particular circumstances. Students should communicate early, frequently, and clearly with their advisors about their progress and engagement in courses and research.

It would be beneficial for law students with children to hear each others' insights on how they can fulfill their professional responsibilities while maintaining strong relationships at home.

LSWC plans on having monthly meetings. Meeting topics will include: studying for finals with a young child, forming a strong support system at home and coping with issues related to stress and workload. LSWC will have a law professional with children, guest speak about time management and family-work balance.

LSWC plans on hosting social outings where law students who are raising families can meet each others’ families. LSWC anticipates hosting events included ice cream socials, fall hay rides, a "Parents' Night Out,” picnics, and trips to local museums.
