Blog Entry 78

So maybe I’m not updating as often as I would like…just a symptom of a busy summer.
This last week was a pretty insane week. On Tuesday, the rest of our grades were posted, and I was excited to find out that I did much better than I expected. Of course that was cause for celebration…I felt as though getting my final grades made this whole last year of hard work worth it.
Then I had my externship Wednesday through Friday. The attorney I usually work with was out of town this past week, and the attorney I was supposed to be working with instead was late on Wednesday, so I had to seek out something to do. I ended up working with one of the lead attorneys in the Public Integrity division, and got the opportunity to really work through a case and do some legal research. It was my first chance to really get to know the facts of a case, and then to follow it through, doing research to figure out how to apply the law to the facts. I loved the experience of taking the research skills I learned in ALTA and applying them to the real world…I’m still only a year in, but maybe I can do this whole law thing after all!
On Friday, they announced the results of the Law Review write-on competition and the Moot Court Board of Advocates try-outs. I was accepted to both, so now I have to decide whether I want to do one, the other, or both. Both are incredible opportunities, but I’m still not sure of the exact time commitment for each, and I don’t want to get myself in over my head before the year even starts…something to think about.
The weekend was pretty relaxing. I spent some time with my family, and had some lazy time to myself. Then yesterday and today were more productive, plenty of housework and errands. The power steering was messed up on my car; it was covered by recall, but unless you were having problems they weren’t fixing just everyone’s car yet. I got to wait until it was messed up to take it in and have it repaired. Based on the amount of time it was going to take for them to repair it, this process involved getting my sister up and moving in the morning to pick me up from the dealership and then dropping me off the next morning; easier said than done…
So now that you know how I’m spending my summer, let’s talk about you. What are your concerns with starting law school as a 1L? What are things that would be helpful for me to discuss in my blog? Let me know…
