Thursday, only one day to go!
Today is another weird day. I had contracts in the morning at 9am, and now I am waiting for my ALTA conference at 2pm. Just a bit of a break…
My big concern of the day? My back. As I have started bring my computer with me to school more and more regularly, my backpack has become increasingly heavy and my back is definitely taking notice, responding with back pain, headaches, even dizziness. Oh what fun. After a particularly long day at school, I even went so far as to check the weight of my backpack and was appalled to find that it was a hefty 30 pounds. If you almost fall over backward when putting on your backpack…you probably have too much stuff.
I am starting to take steps to reduce the strain on my back, including being selective about bringing my books to class (which, depending on the class is not always possible) and making better use of my locker (this year, the SBA offered them for $10 for the year…a worthwhile investment if I do say so myself).
Some other tips for future law students: go with a backpack instead of a messenger-style bag or a professional tote. Having two straps on your bag helps to balance the weight evenly, which will definitely help. I see all sorts of people walking around with cute bags that are bulging at the seams and I just don’t know how their shoulders and spine can tolerate it. Also, if you are in the market for a new computer and anticipate dragging it back and forth to school with you, look at the product weight and go with a portable design. I love my new(ish) 14” HP notebook…but I now regret not going with the lighter-weight 12” model.
Think about it. You really don’t want something as silly as carrying a heavy backpack to haunt you the rest of your life…
