Fifteen days.
In fifteen days, I will have completed my moot court competition, the final draft of my law review comment will be submitted, and life will be less crazy. Of course, I’m a second year law student, so no guarantees on what “less crazy” entails…but it will definitely be a relief to get these two items off my “to do” list.
Yesterday was the long-awaited Law Review Symposium. The Symposium was held at the beautiful Detroit Athletic Center, and discussed the jurisprudence of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. After a harrowing drive downtown on the ice covered roads (it took me an HOUR to get there…it should have taken thirty minutes!), I was pleased to find that the event lived up to our expectation. The speakers were phenomenal, and presented a great balanced view of the first twenty years of Justice Thomas’s time on the Supreme Court. The law review’s Symposium committee put a lot of time and effort into putting the event together, so I was really excited by how well it went.
After I got home from the Symposium (after an hour drive home in rush hour…I’m never taking I-94 again!), I was completely and utterly exhausted. I read some cases for moot court, but then I decided I needed to just set all of my work aside, and take some time to just unwind from the week. I ended up watching Morning Glory (which I highly recommend!), eating some ice cream, and then heading to bed.
Of course, there’s no escaping the work…it catches up eventually. This morning, I met my moot court partner at school, and we spent several hours working through our arguments. The challenge with this competition is that we each have to learn two separate arguments: one for the petitioner, and another for the respondent. It’s tricky because I’ll come up with a brilliant argument for one side…but then I have to figure out how I’ll attack it from the other side. I guess it’s a great way to make sure you’re anticipating your opponent’s arguments, but it is just so time consuming! The competition is on Friday and Saturday of next week, so I’m hoping we will get ourselves together by then!
Tonight, I’m hoping to make some progress with my law review comment. It’s slowly coming together…I just worry that it’s TOO slowly. I really need to step up my game, as much as I can anyway with all of these other commitments. The stress is piling up, but I just keep reminding myself that I can handle anything for fifteen days…right?
