Hon. Michael J. Talbot, Michigan Court of Appeals

talbotHon. Michael J. Talbot (J.D. ’71), judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals, is the 2012 recipient of the University of Detroit Mercy’s Distinguished Alumni Award.  Judge Talbot is recognized for his long and impressive record on the bench, combined with tireless service to the community, the Church, and the legal profession.

Born in Wayne County, Judge Talbot grew up in Livonia and is an alumnus of Divine Child.  A graduate of Georgetown University, where he earned a B.S. degree in Public Administration, Judge Talbot worked for the Office of the Mayor of the City of Detroit and for Leaseway Transportation while attending the University of Detroit Law School at night.  He also served in the United States Army Reserve from 1969 to 1975, having graduated from the Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia as a second lieutenant.

From 1972 to 1978, Judge Talbot was a partner in the law firm of Talbot, Grant & McQuarrie.  In April 1978, he was appointed by Governor William Milliken to the Common Pleas Court for the city of Detroit; in 1980, Gov. Milliken appointed Judge Talbot to Detroit Recorder’s Court. Governor John Engler appointed Judge Talbot to the Wayne Circuit Court in 1991 and to the Court of Appeals in 1998. 

Judge Talbot’s special concern for crime victims and criminal jurisprudence is reflected in his professional activities.  He helped draft Michigan’s groundbreaking Crime Victim’s Rights Act and served on the State Bar of Michigan’s Special Committee on Victims of Crimes.  A past chair of the State Bar’s Criminal Law Section, he has also served on the State Bar’s Criminal Jurisprudence Committee and Committee of Court Administration.  He has twice received the Crime Prevention Association of Michigan Service Award, in addition to the State Bar of Michigan Service Award and the Michigan Corrections Association Judicial Servant Award.

Judge Talbot’s community activities include serving as chair of the Archdiocese of Detroit’s Board of Education; he is the current chair of the Archdiocese’s Review Board and a trustee of the Archdiocese’s Endowment Fund.  He is also a trustee of Madonna University and Sacred Heart Major Seminary, and serves on the board of Angela Hospice Home Care, Inc.

Judge Talbot was a member of the Judicial Tenure Commission from 2004 to 2010; he currently chairs the Court Reporting and Recording Board of Review for the Michigan Supreme Court.  His term expires January 1, 2015. 

 

University of Detroit Mercy School of Law Alumnus of the Year Award

The Law Alumnus/Alumna of the Year is selected by the Law Alumni Association Board of Directors in January of each year.  The award was established by the Board in 1985 to honor alumni who have in many ways distinguished themselves in their chosen field or endeavor, and who through their careers have brought recognition and honor to the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.
