Professor Stellingwerf began his professional career as a Senior Project Engineer with Fisher Body at the General Motors Corporation where he was responsible for the design and development of urethane foam manufacturing systems. After earning his J.D., he clerked for the Michigan Court of Appeals. From 1977 until July 2011, he worked as in-house counsel at DTE Energy as a General Attorney in the Commercial Group. In that role, Professor Stellingwerf has drafted and negotiated contracts; developed and conducted contract administration and contract drafting training classes; resolved disputes, including arbitration and litigation; and provided advice to all levels of management. He also formed and advised many subsidiary entities. He has also handled commercial transactions and relationships, including wholesale and retail customer contracts, project finance, supply chain, purchase orders, construction, software, and general corporate and joint ventures. Since July 2011, he has continued to serve DTE Energy as outside counsel.
Professor Stellingwerf is an experienced arbitrator and mediator. He has also taught as an Adjunct Professor at Detroit College of Law and as an Instructor at the American Institute for Paralegal Studies.
