Markeisha J. Miner joined University of Detroit Mercy School of Law as the Assistant Dean of Career Services and Outreach in the fall of 2008. In that capacity, Ms. Miner oversees all aspects of career planning and professional development. She earned her B.A., magna cum laude, at Mount Holyoke College and her J.D. at the University of Michigan Law School. In law school she was an Executive Editor of the Michigan Journal of Race & Law, a research assistant to Prof. David Chambers, and Placement Chair of the Black Law Student Alliance. She also was a student attorney in Michigan’s Legal Assistance for Urban Communities Clinic, where she assisted community development organizations in Detroit with their transactional legal needs, and completed an externship at the Commission on Gender Equality in Durban, South Africa.
After law school Ms. Miner served as a judicial clerk to the Honorable Anna Diggs Taylor on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Following her clerkship she practiced as a commercial litigator in Dickinson Wright PLLC’s Detroit office where she was an inaugural member of the firm’s Diversity Committee and co-authored the firm’s Diversity Mission Statement.
Ms. Miner is active in several bar and community organizations including the American Bar Association’s Tort, Trial & Insurance Practice Section, which selected her for its 2008-2009 Leadership Academy; the State Bar of Michigan, for which she serves on the Character & Fitness Committee; and, the Wolverine Bar Association which honored her with its Margrette A. Taylor Distinguished Young Lawyer Award in 2007. In 2010, the Michigan Chronicle named her as a Young History Maker. Ms. Miner sits on the Board of Trustees for the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan Foundation and the Board of Directors for Alternatives for Girls. She also is a member of NALP—the Association for Legal Career Professionals’ Diversity and Solo & Small CSO Sections. She was appointed to serve as NALP's Liaison to the American Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division for 2012-2014.
