Attorney General Introduces New Manual Written by UDM’s Veterans Law Clinic

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette held a press conference on Thursday, July 17, 2014, to introduce the new "Michigan Military and Veterans' Legal Services Guide." The Guide is a combined effort of the Attorney General's Office and the University of Detroit Mercy's Veterans Law Clinic.

It provides Michigan military personnel and veterans, and those who assist them, with a directory of resources to address legal and legal-related issues. The Guide contains resources specific to the needs of veterans, including how to obtain VA benefits, as well as resources to assist them with other legal problems that may not be related to their status as veterans. UDM Law's Dean, Phyllis Crocker, spoke at the press conference and commented, "As a military-friendly school, and one that serves our community on a daily basis, we appreciate the opportunity for our Veterans Law Clinic to work with the Attorney General's Office on the 'Michigan Military and Veterans' Legal Services Guide.'" Dean Crocker also praised the efforts of UDM clinical professor Margaret Costello and UDM law student Shaquana Snyder, who worked together with other students to produce the Guide.

This Guide for veterans is one example of how the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law is dedicated to assisting our nation's veterans on a daily basis. The School's Veterans Law Clinic and Veterans Appellate Clinic represent veterans and their families in Michigan to obtain veterans benefits for service-connected disabilities. In 2008, the School initiated Project SALUTE, an award-winning national program through which the School holds legal clinics throughout Michigan and the United States for veterans seeking assistance with their disability and pension benefits claims. In addition, Project SALUTE also trains volunteer attorneys to prepare them to represent veterans before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in pursuit of federal veteran's benefits.

The "Michigan Military and Veterans' Legal Services Guide" is available on the Attorney General's website.
