Veterans Service Project

On September 11, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law partnered with the Michigan Veterans Foundation (MVF) and the Ford Volunteer Corps to create a Warrior Garden at MVF in Detroit to feed homeless veterans.

Volunteers from the three organizations constructed 12 raised garden beds and stained seven park benches for the new community healing garden, which will provide our local veterans with fresh, organic produce. Planting will take place in the spring at MVF's new location on Jefferson Avenue, and upon harvest the yield will be split in half between MVF and UDM Law. MVF will use the produce to help underwrite the cost of serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner to 130 veterans, 365 days a year. In addition to 100 veterans who reside at MVF's transitional housing facility, MVF feeds veterans who regularly walk-in for meals. UDM Law will sell its half of the yield at the School, and all proceeds will be used for upkeep of the Warrior Garden.

Thank you to those who helped with our Accelerated Service Project with Ford Motor Company in support of our local veterans at Michigan Veterans Foundation. Photo Gallery >>

Red Mass - UDM Law Campus

Tuesday, September 29, 2015 - 12:00 pm

UDM's 103rd Annual Red Mass and Renewal of the Lawyer's Oath of Commitment will be held at Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit Church beginning at 12:00 p.m., followed by a complimentary luncheon in the atrium of the School of Law.  Red Mass is an occasion for judges, lawyers, civic leaders, faculty, staff, and law students of all faiths to pray together at the beginning of the new judicial term, asking God to bless, strengthen, and enlighten us, so that in cooperation and mutual trust we may effectively achieve justice for all.

The Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J., Ph.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, Ohio, will celebrate the Mass.  Hon. Patrick J. Duggan ('58) of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan will lead the Renewal of the Lawyer's Oath of Commitment.
