Welcome to UDM Law Academics

Our curriculum is designed to integrate theory, doctrine and practice to produce graduates who are practice ready. We achieve this through a layered approach to professional education, which starts with the theoretical and doctrinal foundations of the law in the first year. Moving into the subsequent years of training, more advanced doctrinal courses expose students to a wider body of law and to other legal systems through our array of international courses. Students are expected to take at least one course exposing them to another legal system. Students also have the opportunity to explore particular topics in depth with a variety of seminars. These seminars, as well as the writing assignments in the upper level required courses, will hone writing skills and allow students to develop a work product portfolio. Moving toward completion of their degrees, all students will complete one clinic and two law firm program courses that take their theoretical and doctrinal training and put it into the service of a client in a real or simulated case.

A student at our law school will:

  • enagage in live-client representation or related practice
  • participate in sophisticated simulations
  • develop a portfolio of written work product
  • develop a fidelity to ethical standards
  • understand the importance of the global community in the practice of law
  • learn to serve others and
  • be exposed to the School's Roman Catholic identity in ways that promote discussions about the intersection of faith and law

BLSA Hosts Congressman John Conyers - Atrium

The Black Law Students Association of UDM Law will host U.S. Congressman John Conyers (D - MI) in the atrium of the School of Law on Monday, February 13, from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.  The event, "From There to Here:  Civil Rights and the Road Ahead," is presented in celebration of Black History Month.  All UDM Law students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend.

  • NEW DOWNTOWN FACILITY FOR RENOWNED LEGAL AID CLINICS

    University of Detroit Mercy School of Law finalized the purchase of a historic Detroit firehouse on February 1st, 2012, which after being fully renovated, will serve as the new home for its renowned clinical program.  The School plans to open the new facility in December 2012 in conjunction with two significant milestones:  the 100th anniversary of the School’s founding, and the 47th anniversary of its first Urban Law Clinic.

  • Red Mass 2011

    The School of Law hosted its 99th consecutive Red Mass in September. Red Mass is an occasion for judges, lawyers, and officials of all faiths to pray together for guidance at the beginning of the new judicial term and join in the Renewal of the Lawyer’s Oath of Commitment.
