UDM Law Students Argue before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals
March 5 & 6, 2007
For the first time, UDM law students presented oral arguments before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. The cases, brought by UDM’s Immigration Law Clinic on behalf of asylum seekers, were argued on March 5 and March 6, 2007 before separate three-judge panels. The U.S. Court of Appeals is one rung below the U.S. Supreme Court in terms of judicial review. Special permission was requested and granted by the Sixth Circuit to allow the students to argue. It is very rare for practicing attorneys – much less law students -- to argue before the Sixth Circuit.
While only one student can argue on behalf of each client, preparation for oral argument was a group effort. UDM law students enrolled in the Immigration Law Clinic worked as teams to review the files, craft legal theories, and develop cogent and concise oral arguments. Students then practiced their oral arguments for hours before other students and professors acting as Circuit Court judges. Amanda Cindrich and Brent Leder, both 3Ls, argued before the Sixth Circuit on behalf of their clients.
