In Memoriam

David J. Kirschenheiter (’79)

Mr. Kirschenheiter passed away at the age of 55 in May 2010 in the Philippines. He was a 20-year resident of the Republic of Palau, a country he loved. He was free-spirited and dedicated to his life’s work. Mr. Kirschenheiter was a legal aid attorney who dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of disadvantaged people around the globe. He worked at the Palau office of Micronesian Legal Services for 18 years. Before moving to Palau, he worked for the Michigan Appellate Defender’s Office and Berrien County Legal Services for 12 years. His brother, Ronald G. Kirschenheiter (’79), works on the Children’s Attorneys Project for the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada.

Paul J. Raine (’96)

Paul J. Raine passed away at the age of 53 in July 2010 in Madison Heights, MI. He was an attorney and former adjunct faculty member at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, where he taught Computer and Internet Law.

Mr. Raine had an extensive background in technology and several years of experience handling civil litigation and resolving mortgage foreclosure issues. In addition to his teaching experience at UDM Law, he was an adjunct professor at Walsh College in Troy, MI and at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, MI. He also served on the State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly, the Standing Committee on Professional Ethics, the Standing Committee on Technology, and was the past Chair of the Computer Law Section.



Paul Raine loved to travel the world and did so extensively for many years. He was a man of high integrity and professional and personal ethics. Most importantly to him, Mr. Raine was a loving husband and a proud father.

Alvin L. Storrs (’81)

Former UDM Law Adjunct Professor Alvin L. Storrs passed away in April 2010 after a lengthy illness.

Professor Storrs earned a B.A. from Mercy College in 1973; an M.B.A. from U of D in 1981; a J.D. from U of D School of Law in 1982; and an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University in 1984. He practiced with the law firm of Hall, Andary, and Bilicki before assuming the role of tax manager at Ernst and Whinney in Detroit, MI.

Professor Storrs spent three years at U of D Law, where he taught courses in business planning and income taxation. From there he moved on to become a highly-respected member of the Michigan State University College of Law faculty from 1987 to 2010. While at MSU, he was chair of the Taxation Law concentration program, proudly served as faculty advisor to the Black Law Students Association, and taught Basic Income Taxation, Corporate Income Taxation, and Deferred and Executive Compensation.

The Black Law Students Association of UDM Law will host U.S. Congressman John Conyers (D - MI) in the atrium of the School of Law on Monday, February 13, from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.  The event, "From There to Here:  Civil Rights and the Road Ahead," is presented in celebration of Black History Month.  All UDM Law students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend.

  • NEW DOWNTOWN FACILITY FOR RENOWNED LEGAL AID CLINICS

    University of Detroit Mercy School of Law finalized the purchase of a historic Detroit firehouse on February 1st, 2012, which after being fully renovated, will serve as the new home for its renowned clinical program.  The School plans to open the new facility in December 2012 in conjunction with two significant milestones:  the 100th anniversary of the School’s founding, and the 47th anniversary of its first Urban Law Clinic.

    The School of Law hosted its 99th consecutive Red Mass in September. Red Mass is an occasion for judges, lawyers, and officials of all faiths to pray together for guidance at the beginning of the new judicial term and join in the Renewal of the Lawyer’s Oath of Commitment.
