Library Collections
The library collection is comprised of monographs, monographic sets, serials, loose-leaf publications, government documents, and audio-visual materials. Most materials can be located by searching either the online or the card catalog. The locations of the library's audio-visual and special collections are included below.
Microfilm and Microfiche
The microfilm and microfiche collection includes: Congressional Information Service (1970-present), Federal Register (1936-present), Congressional Record (1960-present), and U.S. Supreme Court Records and Briefs 1952-present).
These materials are located on the ground floor of the library. Librarians are available to help find items and to operate the readerprinter.
Paper copies of microfilm and microfiche are $.10 a copy.
Reserves
Reserve items are located behind the circulation desk and include the following: hornbooks, loose-leaf publications, Tax Management portfolios, Michigan statutes, court rules, and treatises, exam model answers, and assigned course materials.
Serials
Serials are located on the third floor of the library. The collection is in the process of being re-catalogued. The majority of journals are shelved in alphabetical order (the library disregards "journal" and "university" in law review titles when alphabetizing.) The journals that have been re-catalogued are located on the opposite side of the third floor, and organized according to Library of Congress call number. A list of available journals is located in a binder at the circulation desk.
Loose-Leaf Publications
The majority of loose-leaf publications are located on the second floor. A selection of the labor and tax loose-leafs are located on the ground floor.
Michigan Records and Briefs
These materials are located on the ground floor of the library, and are catalogued by title of the case. The card catalog for these materials is also located on the third floor.
International and Foreign Law Collection
The majority of the international law materials and foreign law collections are located on the ground floor (English, Canadian).
Government Documents
The library became a government documents depository in 1979. Title 44, Section 1911, of the United States Code, guarantees reasonable public access to all depository materials within the library's collection. Government documents are located on the third floor, with the microfiche materials located on the ground floor. Federal government publications are arranged according to the Superintendent of Documents classification system. All documents published after 1990 are available for searching on Murphy. The Government Documents Catalog Service (GDCS) database or the bound volumes of the Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications may also be used to access the collection.
Law School Exams
The library has law school exams dating back to 1955. The exams from 1995 through 1987 are located on the third floor, and the exams from 1988 through to the present are located on the first floor behind the reference desk. There are also select model answers available at the circulation desk.
Electronic Resources
The UDM Law Library provides access to a wide variety of electronic library resources, including electronic journal indices and abstracts, tables of contents of journals and full text electronic journals. Several of the library's electronic resources are accessible not only in the Library, but also through remote access.
