This week is an exciting week for all incoming first years to UDM Law because it is orientation week!  On Monday, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to meet many of the new students during the Professionalism in Action reception.  Everyone was very nice, had great energy, and seemed really eager to dive in and get the semester started.  That was my perception anyway, and it is quite possible that many were just better at hiding the jitters than I was during my own orientation week.  Either way, it was motivating!

This year each incoming 1L is assigned two upperclass student mentors. If you happen to be a first year reading this and you haven't taken up your mentor's offer to meet yet - you really should!  It is no exaggeration when people say that law school is not like undergrad, and it only takes about 5 minutes of actual studying to figure that out.  That being said, upperclass mentors have been there and done that.  Take them up on their offer to help you out with questions, point you in the direction of a nearby spot for lunch, or vent about how you never actually had to read a textbook before coming to class because those days are long gone.  The mentors are volunteer students who want to help! Not to mention we each probably have some stories from the "battlefield" that could save you from making the same error or at the very least provide a good laugh. I'd share one of my own tales that my classmates fail to let me forget but that would spoil the fun.

Classes officially start on Monday. Oddly enough, I'm looking forward to it!
