The Harry Klein and Shirley Klein Legal Scholarship Fund was set up to honor Harry Klein and his wife, Shirley.  Mr. Klein spent his complete legal career, forty-five years, in public service, particularly in support of non-profit and not-for-profit, corporations.  The primary founders of the Fund are The 501 Alliance and The Human Services Association for Worker’s Compensation Fund, both which Mr. Klein helped to establish in 1972. This is the 18th consecutive year of awarding the scholarship.

After graduation from Wayne State University Law School, Mr. Klein became a trial attorney with the Legal Aid Society, which later became known as the Legal Aid and Defender Association of Detroit.  After twenty-four years of direct service to the community, he took on additional responsibilities as agency counsel for United Community Services of Metropolitan Detroit and many of its member agencies and organizations.  While a trial lawyer at Legal Aid, Mr. Klein was instrumental in establishing legislation protecting children’s rights and the rights of battered women, long before public concern about these issues reached their current level.  As U.C.S. agency counsel, Harry Klein actively represented more than seventy agencies.  His department at United Community Services became known as “Legal Aid for Agencies.”  He was also integral in the formation and organization of a multitude of non-profit and not-for-profit organizations.  Over the years, Mr. Klein developed expertise in agency matters and lectured throughout the country on the subject and in support of a variety of social service agencies and issues.

A goal of the Harry Klein and Shirley Klein Legal Scholarship Fund is to honor and financially assist those who demonstrate a desire and ability to follow in the philosophy and humanity rendered by Harry Klein to social service agencies, non-profit and not-for-profit organizations, the disadvantaged and the underprivileged.

The Scholarship is open to anyone presently enrolled in a law school in the State of Michigan.  Applications must be received by April 2, 2012.  Applications may be submitted by mail, fax, hand delivery or email. One $1,000.00 scholarship will be awarded.
