UDM Law Students Learn through Experiential Education
Our education extends well beyond the classroom. UDM Law students learn about the legal process and serve clients directly in our Law Clinics and at externships with nonprofit agencies and public offices. Students handle transactions from initiation through negotiation to closing as “associates” in our Law Firm Program; argue complex cases in moot court; and complete rigorous coursework that emphasizes analysis and writing. In short, UDM Law grads are prepared to work, and add instant value to a future employer’s organization.
Practice-Ready and Career-Ready Curriculum
Law Firm Program courses bridge the gap between legal theory and practice. Students handle simulated legal transactions as though they were in a law firm or corporate legal department. This experience translates instantly to employers as graduates are able to contribute immediately to a variety of legal tasks and transactions.
Clinic Experiences train students for legal work while providing valuable services to the community. Our Clinics give students hands-on legal experience and the opportunity to help those with the greatest need and least resources.
Externships provide students with real-world experience in the legal field. Students carry their own case loads, conduct research, draft briefs and memoranda, interact with attorneys and prosecutors, and learn hands-on about both the demands and rewards of the profession – all under the guidance of a seasoned attorney or judge.
Moot Court is designed to shape students into persuasive communicators and advocates. Every first-year student participates in a mandatory internal moot court competition with critiques by practicing attorneys and judges. Upper-level students compete for spots on national moot court competition teams.
Emphasis on Writing and Ethics is a vital part of the UDM Law education and the Jesuit tradition of knowledge building and moral integrity. Rigorous writing and attention to legal ethics are stressed in every course. Our acclaimed Legal Writing Program has garnered a number of national awards.
