Jerome P. Cavanagh Scholarship and First-year Dean's Scholarship
Each year the Law School awards a number of scholarships to first-year students. These scholarships recognize outstanding promise for the study of law. The Jerome P. Cavanagh Scholarship honors the Memory of Jerome P. Cavanagh, a 1954 graduate of the School of Law and Mayor of Detroit from 1962 to 1970. The School awards the Jerome P. Cavanagh and Dean's scholarships to first-year students at admission. These scholarships are awarded for the duration of legal studies at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.
Association of Corporate Counsel of America (ACCA) Scholarship
The Michigan Chapter of the ACCA annually awards a $1,000 scholarship to a third, or fourth-year law student who shows outstanding promise in the field of corporate law. ACCA encourages students to consider careers in corporate legal departments.
Aline Felton Berkeley Scholarship
This annual award is presented to a third-year student based on scholarship and financial need. It was established in memory of Aline F. Berkeley, who was a third-year honor student and a Case and Comment Editor on the Law Review at the time of her death in December 1982.
Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI) Award
This award is presented to the student in each law school course achieving the top grade in the course. CALI is a consortium of the nation's law schools which provides research and development and a distribution network for computer-assisted instruction in the law. Its library of instructional materials contains over 90 lessons in 21 areas of the law.
Ferd J. & Lottie Chmielnicki Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded annually to two second- or third-year law students who have demonstrated financial need, academic merit, and a concentration in the study of business law, environmental law, or both.
Dean’s Scholarship for Academic Excellence
Each year a limited number of awards are made to recognize outstanding academic performance by students entering their second or third year. The amount is determined after consideration of relevant factors including other available financial resources.
William O. Douglas Award
The Urban Law Clinic gives this award to a student for outstanding contribution to its work.
Endowed Scholarships
The Dean awards several endowed scholarships each year, usually based on academic merit and demonstrated financial need. These scholarship awards vary and may include the Edward M. Babcock Memorial Scholarship, the Irvin Palman Scholarship, the Herbert and Elsa Ponting Scholarship, the Margaret V. Rose Scholarship, and others.
Federal Bar Association Edward Rakow Foundation Award
The Federal Bar Association awards the Edward Rakow Foundation Award each year to a senior law student selected by the Dean.
Ford Motor Company Law School Leadership Award
Ford Motor Company, in consultation with the Dean, awards the Ford Motor Company Law School Leadership Award of $10,000 to a student who demonstrates leadership skills, promotes diversity, makes a positive difference, and exhibits other leadership qualities.
Ralph M. Freeman Foundation Award
The Dean awards the Ralph M. Freeman Foundation Award to a senior who earned the highest grade in Civil Procedure and represents the civility and professionalism expected of a trial attorney.
Amelia and Emil G. Graff Scholarship Fund
Based on outstanding academic merit, this annual scholarship provides a full- or part-time student with financial assistance.
William Henry Gallagher Awards
Furnished by the Law Alumni Association, these awards are presented to the first ($250) and second place ($150) winners of the annual intra-school criminal law moot court competition. In addition, the writer of the best brief is given a cash award.
Sharon C. Ranucci Memorial Scholarship
A senior law student who demonstrates academic merit, financial need, and excellence in advocacy courses is awarded this scholarship.
The Harold E. Mountain Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by friends and admirers of Harold E. Mountain, Jr. It is awarded annually to a student who has performed well academically and has participated extensively in school activities.
The Negligence Section of the Michigan State Bar Association Scholarship
The State Bar of Michigan provides a limited number of scholarships to law students based on their academic performance in torts and trial practice courses and the recommendation of the dean.
Hon. John R. Perry Memorial Scholarship
This new scholarship awards $7,500 for the third year of studies at the School of Law based on a variety of criteria, including academic merit and financial need.

Presidential Scholarships
Various amounts are awarded annually by the School of Law in recognition of service by officers of the Law Review, the Moot Court Board, the Black Law Students’ Association, the Student Bar Association, and the editor of the student newspaper, In Brief. Scholarships traditionally range in value from $1,000 to full tuition. Some of these scholarships may not be used in conjunction with Cavanagh, Dean’s, or other scholarships.
The Wayne County Probate Judge’s Memorial Scholarship
Annual awards of $750, $1,000, or $1,500 are granted to three upper-class students by the Wayne County Probate Association. To qualify, students must attend one of the two law schools in Wayne County and demonstrate an interest in probate law
The Wolverine Bar Association
These annual awards are given to noteworthy minority law students who are either Michigan residents or who are enrolled in law schools in Michigan.
Outstanding Woman Law Student Award
The Women Lawyers' Association of Michigan Foundation annually awards a scholarship to a full- or part-time female law student in good academic standing who demonstrates leadership capability, participates in community service, and shows potential for advancing the position of women in society.
