Financial Aid Newsletter

Friday, August 10

Financial Aid Refunds

  • Excess funds over the cost of tuition and fee charges are refunded back to the student in the form of an institutional check. Refund checks will begin to be distributed on September 7 for students whose loan funds have arrived at UDM by August 30.  These students must be registered within the credit hour range shown on their award letter and must have no other status changes (see next item).  Additional refund checks will arrive in the Financial Aid Office on each subsequent Friday, as funds are received from lenders and posted to students’ accounts.
  • Refunds may be delayed, reduced, or eliminated if the student is not enrolled for the number of credits for which she/he applied for aid; if the student changes living arrangements; if the student fails to complete the entrance interview; if the student has not completed and returned any required promissory note(s) to their lender(s) or required documents to the Financial Aid Office; or if the student receives outside aid not noted on the UDM Scholarship and Financial Aid Application.
  • Students must be financially prepared to purchase books, pay rent and other living expenses on their own until their refund check is available. This may be a minimum of 2-3 weeks for students who completed all their requirements in a timely manner, without changes,  and up to 14 days after the University receives funds from the lender(s) for other students.

Computer Allotment

  • As students are expected to use a computer and print papers for classes, a $2000 allowance for the purchase of a computer and/or printer is included in the first-year law student financial aid budget.  Students are not required to purchase a computer, as there are computers on campus for student use, but may use student loan funds to do so by borrowing up to the amounts listed on their award letter.  The computer funds would be included in the refund checks issued to the student over the course of the academic year if the student applies and has credit approved for the loan funds listed on the award letter.

Address Change Reminder

  • Students who have changed their name, address, and/or telephone number must update their information with the School of Law.  Changes should be submitted to the Admissions Office at:  University of Detroit Mercy School of Law Admissions Office, 651 E. Jefferson, Detroit, MI 48226; phone:  313-596-0264; fax:  313-596-0280; or e-mail:  udmlawao@udmercy.edu.
