After graduating from law school, Professor Gardner clerked on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit with the Honorable Damon J. Keith. She practiced civil litigation at Barris, Sott, Denn & Driker in Detroit, and then served for six years as an Assistant United States Attorney in Detroit in both the civil and criminal divisions. She also served as Executive Assistant to then U.S. Attorney Saul Green, overseeing in-house training, and community and law enforcement task-force efforts.

Professor Gardner joined the law school in 2005.
