Dean’s Advisory Board Student Comments

I was honored and privileged to be invited to meet with members of the Dean's Advisory Board. It was great to meet with accomplished judges, politicians, and partners from the country's largest law firms to hear about their daily work and practice. However, what was most impressive was the fact that each one is fully committed to the continual, dynamic and innovative improvements we are making to the study of law at UDM.

In the short 30 minutes that I spent mingling with the Dean's Advisory Board members, three attorneys from top law firms gave me their cards and asked for my resume. In fact, one contact I made has already resulted in a callback interview with a prestigious NY law firm. (Coincidentally, I had targeted this firm during my research this summer and had sent its recruiter an unsolicited letter of interest. This firm was not slated for the traditional on-campus interviews.) There is nothing like making a contact with an attorney in a firm in which you'd like to interview and having that attorney bring your resume back to the hiring committee.

I already have had several email exchanges with another one of the Dean's advisors who says she has circulated my resume among firms that practice the specialized area of the law in which I'm interested. Also, I had the chance to have lunch with an attorney from a big D.C. firm with whom I had a screening interview scheduled off-campus. I was able to speak with him at length about the firm's culture, its work and its clients. This half hour conversation was better than a whole day of reading the firm's website. I now feel better prepared for my upcoming interview.

Finally, I did meet a lawyer from a smaller firm that doesn't have a formal summer associate program. However, the small firm practices in the legal area and geographic location in which I'm most interested. He gave me his card and invited me to contact him to discuss the possibility of his sponsoring a potential clerkship with his firm.

I think I was just impressed with stature of the attorney-advisors and the firms they represented as they were with Dean Gordon, UDM and the UDM students.  Participating in the DAB was a great opportunity for me as a 2L looking for a summer associate position.  Attorneys from the variety of firms participating in Dean Gordon's Board do not travel to every school for screening interviews.
